Local Customs

Dong Nationality

Dong nationality of our country is mainly distributed in Sanjiang and Longsheng of Guangxi. Their ancestors are “Luoyue” nationality of the Qin and Han dynasties. Dong people generally believe in god and worship natural things. They mainly engaged in agriculture and wood, and mainly produce Yugeng rice, and are good at rice growing and fish cultivation. The wood they produce is mainly fir. Dong people have their own language, and most of them know Chinese. They have their own opera—Dong Opera. The vertical bamboo flute and flute are among the traditional musical instruments of China. Dong people also excel at architectural arts. Each village has wood buildings unique in shape. This kind of wood structure without even a snail and rivet has absorbed some architectural essences of pavilions, platforms and mansions of ancient China.
Dong Nationality Festivals
1. Bridal Festival

The first Mao (the fourth of the twelve earthly branches) Day of October of lunar calendar is the Bridal Festival of Dong nationality. Dozens of young people get married on this day, which is similar to today’s "collective wedding".



2. Bridge Building Day

Legend has it that the ancestor fathers and mothers of Dong nationality had flourishing offspring after they built a bridge. And that day was just February 2nd. In order to commemorate the day, Dong people called that day Bridge Building Day.


3. Firecrackers Festival

The Firecrackers Festival is a traditional festival of Dong nationality, which happens on the March 3rd annually. It is said that it originated from an entertainment conference more than 100 years ago. At the time, to increase the lively atmosphere, three iron firecrackers were fired. After the first report, the iron ring wrapped in red strips shot up to the sky, when it dropped to ground, people rushed forward to scramble for it. The one who grabbed it will be the No. 1. Hence,the No. 2 and No. 3. Now people are organized to scramble for firecrackers in units of villages. Before entering into the firecracker ground one by one, each team shall carry their fireworks, prizes and gifts and walk around the market town. There are still three shots. The first shot represents flourishing offspring, the second shot represents big fortune, and the third shot represents bumper harvest. After the firecrackers are ignited and the iron ring is shot up to the sky, the team members stare at it, leap and scramble for it. When one grab at it, he will pass it to his team mate quickly or run nimbly away from the scrambling crowd. If he runs out of the scrambling crowd, the team he represents will win. Such competition will be held three times. After the firecracker activities are over, the reed-pipe wind instrument group will compete for the musical instrument and dances on the ground. Old people will play with their thrushes under the tree and have chitchats. Young girls and boys talk love by singing songs in antiphonal style. When night falls, campfires are burnt everywhere, some people are singing Dong operas, other are singing folk songs. The Dong villages are permeated with joyful atmosphere everywhere.
Dong Nationality Customs
Sending Spring Cow

Sending Spring Cow is a traditional Dong custom, which happens on the day of Beginning of Spring of lunar calendar. On this day, every household will repair, sweep and straighten out their bullpen, and feed the cows with tender grass, rice and glutinous rice wine. In the evening, they dance “Spring Cow” dance. They use bamboo to make the skeleton of a cow and paste the paper on it to make the cow head, and use grey cloth embellished with velveteen as the cow body and hang a big red flower on it. Two people will guide the road with a big lantern in hands on which it is written two characters “Li Chun” (means the Beginning of Spring). Another two people will dance the “Spring Cow” dance. Closely following up are a group of young men carrying poles and hoes and performing all kinds of ploughing movements, such as drive the cow to plough, dig the mud and harrow the field, fertilize, catch pests. The movements are simple and rough, with rich flavor of life.
Dong Food Customs
Oil Tea of Dong Nationality

Fry tea and corn or glutinous rice and stew and take out the soup. Go with rice cake, soy bean and peanut. Add condiments such as ginger shreds, shallot, pepper, and cordate houttuynia. And shrimp, fish, intestines, pig liver, and lean meat are for meat oil tea. It is a rule that “when guests come to my house, I serve them with oil tea not clear tea”. When eating the oil tea, the guests and hosts sit around a fire, the hostess shall cook and send tea. The first bowl must be presented to distinguished guests or elders. After the host says “please”, the guests can drink it. Drink four bowls successively shows the greatest respect to the host. On lunar September 15, when young people walk the villages, oil tea is much more in a fashion. In that occasion, people drinking 15 bowls successively, and sing songs in antiphonal styles while drinking. Oil tea can refresh the spirit, dispel rheumatism, prevent cold, whet appetite, and has very good health care and medical functions.
